eSanjeevani, the National Telemedicine Service
Helath care: eSanjeevani, the National Telemedicine Service of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India, has become the largest documented telemedicine implementation in primary healthcare worldwide. The service has successfully catered to over 114 million patients at more than 115,000 Health & Wellness Centres, with the support of 15,700+ hubs and over 1100 online OPDs. These services are provided by a network of more than 225,000 doctors, medical specialists, super-specialists, and health workers who serve as telemedicine practitioners. eSanjeevani was launched in November 2019, in line with the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi for Digital India, where quality healthcare reaches even the remotest regions. As a key component of the Ayushman Bharat Scheme, which aims to achieve Universal Health Coverage, eSanjeevani is a testament to the advancement of digital health in India. It has effectively brought healthcare services to rural areas and remote communities through digital means.
The eSanjeevani platform operates in two modes:
1. eSanjeevaniAB-HWC, a provider-to-provider telemedicine platform, enables assisted teleconsultations for patients visiting Health and Wellness Centres. Community health officers at these centres facilitate the teleconsultation between the patient and doctors/specialists at hubs located in secondary/tertiary level health facilities or medical colleges. This mode follows a Hub-and-Spoke model.
2. eSanjeevaniOPD, a patient-to-provider telemedicine platform, allows citizens to access healthcare services from the comfort of their homes using smartphones or laptops.
