Crackdown on Obscene Content
In a bold move against the proliferation of inappropriate content on digital platforms, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) has orchestrated a significant crackdown. This initiative aims to curb the dissemination of obscene, vulgar, and, in some egregious cases, pornographic content across various Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms.
Swift Action: Websites, Apps, and Social Media Accounts Disabled
In a decisive step, the I&B Ministry, in collaboration with several intermediaries, has successfully blocked access to 18 OTT platforms that were found culpable of hosting objectionable content. Alongside these platforms, 19 websites, 10 applications (7 on Google Play Store, 3 on Apple App Store), and 57 associated social media accounts have been disabled, thus preventing public access within the Indian territory.
Government’s Stand: Upholding Moral Standards
Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur, has been vocal about the responsibility borne by digital platforms to uphold moral standards and refrain from propagating obscenity and vulgarity under the guise of ‘creative expression’. His repeated emphasis on this matter underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring a safe and respectful digital environment for all.
Recent Developments: OTT Platforms Taken Down
On the 12th of March, 2024, Shri Thakur announced a significant milestone in the government’s crusade against objectionable content. He revealed that the proactive measures undertaken by the Ministry have led to the removal of 18 OTT platforms that were found to be publishing obscene and vulgar content.
Legal Basis and Collaboration
This recent decision stands on solid legal grounds, executed under the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000. Furthermore, it was made in consultation with various Ministries and Departments of the Government of India, along with domain experts specializing in media and entertainment, women’s rights, and child rights. This collaborative effort underscores the gravity of the issue and the government’s commitment to addressing it comprehensively.
Conclusion: A Step Towards Safer Digital Spaces
The decisive action taken by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting reflects a concerted effort to create safer digital spaces. By holding platforms accountable for the content they host, the government aims to protect the moral fabric of society and ensure a more wholesome online experience for all users. This proactive approach sets a precedent for responsible digital governance, signaling a commitment to safeguarding the well-being and dignity of citizens in the digital age.
