Sela Tunnel
The Sela Tunnel, located at an altitude of 3,000 meters, is set to become the longest bilane tunnel in the world at 13,000 feet. This tunnel will connect Guwahati in Assam to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, ensuring all-weather connectivity. The Nechiphu road tunnel was the first road tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh and the entire northeastern India. Excavation work for the Sela Tunnel, situated below the 4,200 meters Sela Pass on NH 13, began in 2019 with a target completion date of February 2022. Once completed, it will reduce the distance between Dirang and Tawang by 10 km, providing year-round access to Tawang in the western region of Arunachal Pradesh.
The project includes two tunnels of 1,790 m and 475 m lengths, along with an escape tube of 980 m. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh witnessed the breakthrough of the Sela Tunnel in September 2021 and dedicated it to the nation, marking a significant milestone for the Border Roads Organization (BRO) in connecting even the most remote parts of the country.
